(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 26. The number of unemployed registered with the Labour Department had increased, the Minister of Labour (Mr Marshall) said today. In the two weeks ended August 14 the number rose by 234 to 1951, the Minister said in a statement.

The largest increases were recorded at Christchurch. Auckland and Northland, and . the main cause of the increase was the cessation of seasonal activities throughout the country. Some 766 men are engaged in winter employment in Government departments. The current vacancies notified to the department include 1643 for skilled men, a decrease of 38. The number of tradesmen enrolled for employment throughout the country is 41, compared with 37 two weeks earlier. Semi-skilled and unskilled vacancies for then numbered 1287, a decrease of 119. Figures released by the Social Security Department show the number of men receiving unemployment benefit at August 14 as: Auckland 86 (104 two weeks earlier), Wellington-Lower Hutt 3 (3), Christchurch 133 (109), and Dunedin 20 (25). In Blenheim four men were registered as unemployed, compared with six two weeks earlier; in Nelson 35 (33), Greymouth 38 (37), Christchurch 295 (216), Timaru 41 (48); Oamaru 17 (20).
