WORK OF LEAGUE IN COMMUNITY
A call for an increase in financial membership of the Christchurch diocese’s Catholic Women’s League was made by the president (Mrs Freda Cameron) at the annual meeting last evening.
People were more important than money but hard facts forced her to acknowledge the absolute heed for an income of respectable proportions if the league was to get the staff it deserved and not just what it could afford.
The diocese contained 35 branches and 2036 members, 351 of whom were unfinancial, said the council report. Members had shown they were more than willing to help in the league’s projects. Missions in the Pacific received $3841 in aid, and Maori missions $769. Branches gave $486 either for school fees or teaching orders. This included $223 by Temuka for fees to Maori colleges. Community and social services benefited by $546 and a large quantity of goods for sales stalls. In addition to mission work 15 branches sponsored children for $445 and gave $578 to special relief appeals; and $6O was contributed to the
seminary bursary fund, with $1214 still to be collected. More than $558 was given to the Maori mission fund. Branch sponsorship of diocesan commitments were: Addington, Society for Protection of Home and Family; Cathedral, Save the Children Fund; Dallington, Aged People’s Welfare stall; Halswell, Christchurch Hospital Patients’ Adoption; Bryndwr, Pan Pacific and South-East Asia Women’s Association; Papanui, Glenelg Health Camp; Burnside, Catholic Overseas Aid. Reports were received from representatives on the National Council of Churches Women’s Committee, Glenelg Health Camp, Christchurch Hospital Patients’ Adoption Trust, Society for Research on Women in New Zealand, Kingslea, Society for Protection of Home and Family, and the National Council of Women.
