COAL FOR JAPAN

Inquiry In Colombia (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) TOKYO, Aug. 25. Japan has decided to liberalise Its coal imports and is investigating the possibility of developing a coalmine in Colombia to help alleviate a shortage of coking coal, the official Jiji press agency reported yesterday, Coking coal Is one of several items for which the Ministry of International Trade and Industry decided yesterday to liberalise imports as from September 1. Japan is also investigating the possibility of importing coking coal from the West Coast of New Zealand.

The press agency said the Nichimen Company, a leading trading house, had sent two experts to Colombia to explore the possibility of helping to develop a coalmine.

The experts were surveying the Matur mine, in south-east Colombia, which was estimated to hold 60 million tons of coking coaL A trial shipment of 3000 tons of Colombian coking cdal in June was favourably accepted by the Nippon Steel Corporation.
