tv Z F » .Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. August 26. British teachers of the deaf yesterday watched the first demonstration in Britain of a new American technique enabling deaf people to communicate. The system, known as cued speech, relates hand movements to the sound and movement of the lips. The man who developed it. Dr R. Orin Cornett, vicepresident of the Gallaudet College for the Deaf at Washington. D.C., outlined his methods at an International conference in London. In cued speech, he said, four positions of the hand indicate groups of vowels and eight hand-shapes identify contrasting consonants chosen according to lip movements.
