Stormy Seas Promising

"The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL.

Stormy Seas was not extended when he worked with the Gore candidate. Just One, over three furlongs in 43 2-ssec, the first furlong in 14 l-s£ec, at Inver* cargill yesterday. The Whistling Willie three-year-old looks a better horse than ever after his racing in Canterbury during the winter and will not need much sharpening for his early spring classic engagements. The course proper, with the trestles out 30ft, provided good but easy footing after a 17deg. frost.

Bellaware, one of the favourites for the President’s Handicap at the Eastern Southland Hunt meeting, worked over a round on her own, finishing the last three in 41 3-ssec—and did it well.

One of the best efforts of the morning was credited to the novices, Texan Tony and Belle Cafe, which were paired over three furlongs in 42sec, the first furlong in 13 2-ssec. Texan Tony is a half-brother by Bellborough to Black Wonder. N)ne of the most impressive of a number of two-year-olds in work at Invercargill Is a Lomond colt from the Kurdistan mare, Goldsmith Maid in S. G. Shaw’s team. He sprinted down the straight in company with a Mellay colt from Miks Sandra yesterday and handled himself in seasoned style. Gore Work Queen’s Birthday, a candidate for the President’s Handicap, worked over nine furlongs, the last mile in Imin 49 2-ssec, being brought home from the half in 53 3-ssec by her close relative, Majestic Star, a two-year-old winner last season. Queen’s Birthday will not do much more racing as she is to be served by Mellay later in the season. The galloping at Gore was done on the outside of -the course proper and the going was firm, but dead. Redlo and Otaku, two good types of three-year-old novices in E. A. Winsloe’s team, finished well clear of Coolangatta and Jovanah at the end of a smart half mile in 52 l-ssec, the first furlong in 12 2-ssec. Two of Winsloes novices to show up were Rogart (Kurdistan— Sharleen) and Nerium (Bellagocia—Sen), which sprinted three in 40 3-ssec.
