INDECENCY PETITION
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 25. A campaign against indecency, being waged by Miss Maureen Bartlett, of Woburn, was continued in Parliament today by the presentation of another of her petitions. Miss Bartlett’s, together with two other identical petitions presented today, seeks a tightening of the law concerning the display and sale of books, magazines or sound recordings which are subject to attention by the Indecent Publications Tribunal.
Parliament already has before it a petition by Miss Bartlett calling for nudity, bare female breasts and depictions of human sexual intercourse to be legally defined as indecent. Identical petitions, prompted by Miss Bartlett’s campaign, have also been received.
The petitions presented today seek to make it an offence for material which is ruled indecent for all but specific groups or ages, to be displayed to anyone but those covered by the tribunal’s ruling.
Their aim is to stop indecent books from being “flaunted” in front of young people and to stop the sale of material referred to the tribunal until that body has made a ruling.
