Professor McLean To Retire Next Year

Professor J. W. McLean, head of the veterinary science department at Lincoln College, will retire on February 28 next year, it was announced yesterday. The college council, whose members have expressed deep appreciation of Professor McLean’s association with the college for 39 years, has granted him access to research records after the terminaion of his duties, to enable him to complete outstanding publications. He has also been granted six months retiring leave. Professor McLean is well known, both at home and overseas, for his research and publications on animal health problems; the latter have included a study of the growthrate in lambs in Canterbury, inheritance of resistance to disease, lameness in sheep after dipping, the problem of low non-fat solids in milk, progeny testing in sheep, and mortality rates in ewes and lambs. Professor McLean is a former president of the Veterinary Association, and has been a member of many

special committees set up in veterinary science.

The first dean of the faculty of agriculture and horticulture at Lincoln, he became lecturer in veterinary Science and head of the department in 1944. In 1950 he

was appointed associate professor of veterinary science, and a professor in 1966. He has been visiting lecturer in zoology at the University of Canterbury for several years.
