RAILWAY TENDER

U.S. To Supply Locomotives (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 24. Fifteen 96-ton diesel-elec-tric locomotives will be supplied to the Railways Department by a United States company at a cost of about ®m, the Minister of Railways (Mr Gordon) said today. The Minister said in a statement that the General Electric Company was the successful tender of 11’ valid tenderers from four countries for the supply of the locomotives for the new Silver Star express service for the North Island main trunk. ! The locomotives will be delivered in the second half of next year, soon after the start of the new service. They will be the most powerful in New Zealand, with almost double the power of the locomotives at present hauling most of main trunk traffic.
