Expansion By Woolworths
The Woolworths Supermarkets at Bishopdale, New Brighton and Hornby will receive a face-lift, as part of a modernisation programme by the company. Seven other existing branches—at Taupo, Whakatane, South Dunedin, Mosgiel, 'Glen Innes, Glencarry and Lower Hutt—will also be modI ernised.
Some will be enlarged, and all will be converted to self service operation, both for food and general merchandise.
Mr J. D. Liddle, manager for New Zealand of Woolworths (N.Z.), Ltd, said that the objective of the proposed conversion is to provide greater customer convenience and a wider selection of merchandise, with particular emphasis upon more comprehensive ranges of perishable foods, including meat, frozen foods, and delicatessen items. Recently Woolworths announced that it will open two large supermarkets in Mangere and St Lukes, the shopping centre Haywrights, Ltd, is developing as a joint venture with Lend Lease Corporation, Ltd.
