MARCHING FAREWELL
Mr R. Cairns, who has boon associated with marching ur Chrlstchurch since 1948, was thanked for his services at « farewell function held by, friends of the Canterbury, Marching Centre in Christ-, church last evening.
Mr Cairns has been secretary of the Canterbury centre twice, and a vice-president once He is one of 15 life-members tn. the centre. He 16 also a lifemember of the Midland Marching Association. Several top marching team*in Christchurch have been trained by Mr Cairns and h« has the distinction of having trained the first midget team iff Canterbury. Three times b<r has been manager ot teems which have toured overseas. . Mr Cairns, who is being transferred in his employment to Lower Hutt, says he will probably not take an active part In the sport In Wellington a« be feels he owes his allegiance to Canterbury. He may consider taking a position on the national association if he 1* approached. _ , ’ - Mr Cairns and Mrs Catrnfi were presented with a lamp standard and a barometer.
