All Blacks Miss Match
(Prom T. P. MeLZAN) CAPE TOWN. In spite of statements that the All Blacks last night were going to a Coloureds’ Rugby match arranged in their honour, none of the players or the officials attended. This was not because of politics. It was because the Invitation to the match did not come to hand until the All Blacks reached Cape Town on Sunday by which time every member was already fully committed. The match, which was to be between the South African Rugby Union's XV and a South African Rugby Board side bad some historic importance. It was the first time a permit bad been granted by the Department of Community Development for whites to attend a non-white Rugby match.
The game was arranged especially for the All Blacks. “It is a misfortune the invitation was so late,” said the manager (Mr R. L. Burk). “When we were last in Cape Town we were invited by Silvertree Rugby Club, a Coloured Rugby club, to attend a game they would arrange.
“I turned the invitation down only because at that stage we were already fully committed. The invitation for last night’s match came at the eleventh hour and because of the same circumstances as affected Silvertree It could not be considered.”
