Rain fell during much of the game making, the/ field slippery and difficult for fast play but both teams Overcame this to a fair extent. . Ashburton opened' the game ; with several dangerous attacks and twice shots at goal were desperately saved by the Nel- ” son defence. Nelson soon settled 8 to a regular pattern and the . game evened out, both teams 1 having a number of opportuni- > ties to score' from penalty- ( corners and from field play. . The first goal did not come L until just on half-time' when D. . Laing scored from a scramble in the goal-mouth after a pen- ; alty corner had been blocked. 1 From the opening of the second half Ashburton pressed 1 the Nelson goal until it equalised about five minutes into 1 the spell.
