Considering the conditions, a the teams played excellent hockey. Rain fell during much of the game making, the/ field slippery and difficult for fast play but both teams Overcame this to a fair extent. . Ashburton opened' the game ; with several dangerous attacks and twice shots at goal were desperately saved by the Nel- ” son defence. Nelson soon settled 8 to a regular pattern and the . game evened out, both teams 1 having a number of opportuni- > ties to score' from penalty- ( corners and from field play. . The first goal did not come L until just on half-time' when D. . Laing scored from a scramble in the goal-mouth after a pen- ; alty corner had been blocked. 1 From the opening of the second half Ashburton pressed 1 the Nelson goal until it equalised about five minutes into 1 the spell. D. Honey collected a . pass near the edge of the circle, moved to the right, and scored 1 with an excellent shot from , near the back line. 1 This goal put more life into . Ashburton’s play and a couple ' of minutes later P. Bderlage pounced on a loose ball on the edge of the circle and hit a hard knee-high shot past the . goal-keeper. After this goal Ashburton lost some of its stjng and this allowed Nelson to come back strongly. P. Strawbridge netted to level for Nelson about- mid-way through the spell. Both teams made all-out efforts to score the winning 1 goal but neither could pene- i trate the opposing defence.
