Risks At Sea
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 20. Some fishermen tend to
take undue risks and to disregard important safety requirements, according to the annual report of tile Marine Department, tabled in Parliament today. The report says the num-
ber of fishing vessels and lives lost last year is disturbing. In all, 21 fishing vessels foundered at a cost of IS lives. Nine of these boats were lost on the coast of New
Zealand, six on the coast of the Chatham Islands, and six at sea between New Zealand and the Chathams.
Preliminary inquiries were held into 11 casualties, and magisterial investigations were made into the loss of the fishing vessels Golden Dawn, Golden Joy, Kea and La Paloma.
A total of IM casualties in all types of ships were reported to the department last year, including seven cargo vessels, 61 fishing boats, and 98 pleasure craft, the report said.
