Three Ayrshires Over 10001b
Three Ayrshires recorded better than 1000 lb of butterfat in the 1969-70 testing season, according to the secretary of the Ayrshire Cattle Breeders’ Association of New Zealand, Mr G. A. Knight. The butterfat leader and believed to be the second highest producer among all breeds in a 305 days lactation, as well as the all-time record Ayrshire producer, was Ora Cristabel, a seven-year-old cow owned by Mr and Mrs K. W. Shaw, of Levin, and bred by Mr A. Brown, of Stratford, whose, photograph is shown above. Her yield was 11121 b of fat from 19,5811 b of milk—a 5.7 per cent test—in 291 days. Cristabel calved on October 12 last year, travelled to five shows during her lactation and is due to calve again on September 9. Next in line was the eight-year-old Golden Bay cow, Maesgwyn Leonie, owned by Mr L, J. lorns, of Collingwood. Bred by Mr A. E. Williams, of Kaiapoi, this cow returned 10521 b of fat from 15,8501 b of milk, with a 6.6 per cent test in 305 days. She became the breed’s second highest ever butterfat producer.
In breaking her own milk yield record for the Ayrshire breed created only the previous season when she gave 21,0341 b of milk, Ravensdale Gay Lass is now believed to be third highest milk producer of all breeds with her most recent lactation. Owned and bred by Mr R. F. Pollock, of
Outram, Otago, she produced 10501 b of fat and the excellent total of 25,0581 b of milk with a 4.2 per cent test in 305 days as a nine-year-old. This cow won the market milk cow competition sponsored by the New Zealand Milk Board at the last Royal Show in Invercargill.
