FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—An anticyclone centred east of the country is moving slowly eastward. A complex depression covers the south Tasman Sea and an associated frontal zone is advancing toward New Zealand. Forecast:

Canterbury.—North-east winds, fresh to strong about the coast; cloudy and cool, with areas of drizzle.

Nelson.—Light to moderate winds, northeasterly predominating; cloudy and cool, with scattered light rain developing. Marlborough. Easterly winds mainly light to moderate but strong at times in exposed places near Cook Strait; mainly cloudy, with areas of drizzle; cool. Buller and Westland.—Light to moderate northerly winds; cloudy and cool, with scattered light rain developing. Outlook: rain in the west; cloudy elsewhere.
