LEADING SHARES BEAR BRUNT OF SELLERS’ ACTIVITY

Sellers asserted themselves again on New Zealand stock exchanges yesterday, as falls outnumbered rises about five to two on higher turnover. Leading shares bore the brunt of the retreat, and the overseas list was also weak.

The Wellington exchange was the only market which was quiet, but here also the tone was weak. Price changes were generally small; Mason Struthers which gained 10c on the confirmation of the higher bid. and New Zealand Industrial Gases, which lost 15c, were two notable moves. There were few leaders among the rises: Alex Harvey and Winstone had the best gains. Oils, miners, breweries, fertiliser and chemicals, motor shares, insurances, meat packers, timber processors, Wattie, and U.E.8., all shared in the widespread losses.
