SHIFT WORK ON WHARF

Shift work may begin soon at all New Zealand ports except Auckland. The secretary of the Lyttelton Waterside Workers’ Union (Mr M. E. Foster) said after a stop-work meeting yesterday that the new general principal order covering all aspects of work on the New Zealand waterfront would “to all intents and purposes” become effective from August 31.

The order is an agreement drawn up between the Port Employers’ Association and the Waterside Workers’ Federation. It affects all New Zealand ports except Auckland, which voted against its acceptance earlier this year.
