Urban Sprawl
Sir,—With regret I have read the comments of a qualified agricultural scientist who describes urban encroachment on our rural areas as inevitable. His comments were apparently being used to justify motels being established on acknowledged firstrgrade soils. Urban renewal is sadly needed in much of the sprawling city and many decadent eyesores will bear mute testimony to this fact. Most will agree that gradual encroachment may result In the future, btrt before we initiate any form of precedent let us really do something positive in restricting uncontrolled urban sprawl and. at least, delay the day when our outstandingly rich and productive soils are buried beneath commercial and private exploitation on the perimeter of a city sorely In need of widespread renewal. I hope the elected representatives of our local bodies will resist efforts to bury our market lands just for a mouldy dollar.—Yours, etc., THINK BEFORE YOU LEAP. August 18, 1970.
