Honour For Macann

(From

SELWYN PARKER

Paris)

■in

The New Zealand bassbaritone, Rodney Macann, has been selected to sing the title role in a concert performance of Handel’s Julius Caesar at the Berlin Festival. The deep-voiced 28-year-old Christchurch man was chosen by the brilliant conductor, Lorin Maazel, who directs the N.B.C. symphony orchestra, formerly under the baton of Toscanini.

Mr Macann, whose career has progressed astonishingly in the last year, was

appointed to lead the international cast after a private audition before Mr Maazel in New York. The role, known for Its difficulty, Includes six arias and can only be suitably performed by a “big” voice with plenty of stamina and depth. The performance will be on September 26. New Zealand audiences, both radio and concert, will remember Mr Macann for his recent three-montb tour, which included recitals with the noted accompanist, Maurice Till, and roles with the New Zealand Opera Company.
