Woman Still Races Horses At 90
Racing a string of trotting horses is only one of the interests of Mrs W. T. Lowe, of Hinds, who last week celebrated her ninetieth birthday. A family celebration was held at Mrs Lowe’s farm and trotting stud, Clarendon, on Wednesday, with her five sons and four daughters present, as well as 36 of her 39 grandchildren and most of her 40 great - grandchildren. The youngest great-grandchild was not present—being still in a nursing home. T he great-grandchildren had the task of blowing out the 90 candles on Mrs Lowe’s birthday cake, which was made and iced by a granddaughter. Mrs Lowe and her husband, who died in 1960, took up the farm in 1912 and established the trotting stud and training establishm’ent. Mrs Lowe took a keen interest in the stud over the years. A number of horses were raced in her name. This interest has continued since her husband’s death, when a son, Mr W. E. Lowe, took over this work. The horses are still stabled and trained on this farm, on which Mrs Lowe lives with a daughter, Miss I. E. Lowe. Miss Lowe said her mother’s great interests were in her trotting horses and her family. Miss Lowe said her mother kept very good health. She was an avid reader, was interested in every thing going on about her, and was still a regular patron of trotting meetings in Canterbury, Miss Lowe said. Mrs Lowe has three horses racing at the moment-—Pun,
Wag, and Pono—and at least two horses in recent years reached New Zealand Cup class. They were Merval, and her daughter, Atanui. Another good performer was Trusty Scott.
