Restrictions Objected To
A restriction to only five minutes for speaking time at the Hiroshima Day ceremony last week has been described as “unnecessary and provocative” by the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament The address at the ceremony was given by Canon E. A. Johnston, principal of Christchurch College. In a supplied statement, the secretary of the Christchurch branch (Miss A. Neale) said that the time limit was also of concern because of the present discussion on the proposed by-law on demonstrations. “A petty restriction of five minutes on a speaker of the calibre of Canon Johnston does not seem to indicate a willingness to administer the by-law liberally. We would also comment on a delay of nearly two weeks between the request for a permit and the reply. This was unnecessarily annoying,” Miss Neale said.
