‘Bungling’ Allegation
(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, August 4. President Nixon is alleged to have bungled an opportunity to let Hanoi know that the United States is ready to negotiate a coalition government for South Vietnam. An American television commentator, Frank Makiewicz, said last night that in his televised press conference last Thursday, Mr Nixon said that the United States was opposed to a coalition government in South Vienam. whether it was negotiated or imposed.
“That,” commented Mr Makiewicz, “seemed to end any chance of success in Paris. But after the press conference, the President admitted to aides that he had meant to say, ‘We would not negotiate a coalition government in Saigon which did not include some elements of the present Government’ “In other words, the President meant to tell Hanoi that a coalition government without President Thieu and VicePresident Ky was indeed negotiable.”
