ARBOR DAY PLANTING
Hundreds of trees and shrubs will be planted by schoolchildren throughout New Zealand today in observance of Arbor Day. In Christchrch, 230 children from the Avondale, Chisnalwood, Freeville, and St Martin’s schools will take part in the city’s annual ceremony at Elizabeth Park, Cashmere, this afternoon. The gathering will be addressed by the Mayor (Mr A. R. Guthrey). The South Malvern School will plant trees today and tomorrow at its new plantation near the old Whitecliffs railway.
Arbor Day is traditionally observed in New Zealand on the first Wednesday of August It was first observed at Greytown, in the Walrarapa, when a road past the cemetery was planted in trees on July 3, 1890. August 4 was declared a public holiday in Government offices in 1892 for the celebration of Arbor Day which, although no longer a public holiday, is still widely observed.
