to that string is struck: when the finger is lifted from the key, the damper returns to its contact position, silencing further vibration in that string. Sombreness. grandeur these are among the many effects that make the loud pedal a rich asset. The soft pedal, as the name implies, has the effect of creating a quieter-than-normal sound. Pressure on the soft pedal causes the entire keyboard to shift slightly to the left. Except for the lowest range, a piano's notes are made up of more than one string. Notes in the middle range have two parallel strings. In the upper range there are three strings. This means that when the keyboard shifts, and action mechanism with it, the hammers in the middle range will strike only one string instead of two, while the hammers in the upper range will strike two strings instead of three. The fewer strings struck, the smaller the volume. This is the principle on which the soft pedal works.
