Road Death Figures
Fatal road accidents in the city of Christchurch tn the first six months of the year actually decreased in comparison with the number in the same period last year, the Traffic Superintendent for the Christchurch city area (Mr J. F. Thomas) said yesterday. Nine persons were killed in road accidents in the first half of the year, compared with 12 in the first six months of 1969, said Mr Thomas. Sixteen persons were killed in road accidents in the city during the whole of 1969 Mr Thomas emphasised that he was giving the number of fatal accidents in Christchurch city, excluding outlying areas. The Christchurch St John Ambulance service, for which figures for six months were given in “The Press” yesterday, is called to accidents not only in the area of Christchurch city but also to accidents in areas controlled by neighbouring local bodies. In the first six months of 1970, St John drivers attended accidents in their area in which 22 persons were fatally injured, compared with 11 in the first six months of 1969.
