CITY'S VIEW New Reading And Stormwater
Unless the Christchurch Drainage Board took positive steps to co-ordinate a major stormwater programme for the inner city area with the reading proposals (including oneway streets) associated with the transport plan for the metropolitan area, and priorities assessed on that basis, the continuing development of the whole region could be adversely affected by the resulting delays, the City Council informed the board last evening.
The board, at its previous meeting, said that the oneway streets increased the danger of surface flooding to adjacent properties, complained about not being informed soon enough of detailed reading plans, and suggested that the City Council, because it was causing a change in conditions, should contribute towards the cost of installing larger stormwater drains. "The council is aware of the desirability of submitting detailed plans as early as possible, but unfortunately with the current staffing position this is not always practicable,” the council said in its letter.
