RETAIL AWARD
Pay Rise Agreed A 20 per cent increase in wage scales in the General Retail Shop Assistants’ Union award has been announced. The award rate adjustment will cover all districts other than the Auckland province and will apply to retail shop assistants other than those in food and chemists’ shops. Members of the New Zealand Retailers’ Federation would be recommended to apply the adjustment from the first full pay week after August 1, Mr N. M. West, the federation’s advocate, and Mr H. C. Brock, the assistant secretary of the Shop Employees’ Federation, said in a joint statement yesterday. A change would be made in the basis of payment for part-time workers who were unable to accept full-time employment, said the statement A change would also be made in the list of merchandise where the handling called for male rates of pay. The adjusted wage scales were designed to provide an increase for those receiving less than the agreed figures which are: adult males $44.87, adult females $30.49, at the age of 21.
