Merivale Lane
Sir, —Some weeks ago a television feature suggested that the narrow part of Merivale Lane had some special character that should be preserved. A walk down the street makes one wonder what this “special character” could possibly be. One frontage has unkempt grass and gorse right on the street, with old timber and iron piled under a tree. The Education Board seems to be pro-
pagating giant strains of dock and fathen in front of Ferndale School. Further along, old galvanised iron gates have fallen from their moorings, and have been removed instead of rehuhg. The gaps expose unpainted garages and broken concrete. It would take very little to reverse this process of decay, but if the residents of this one-time charming little street do not care about it, let us not talk of preservation.—Yours, etc., MARY VALE. July 26, 1970.
