Czechs Defeat N.I., 126-80

(N Z. Press Association) NAPIER.

Reaching full stride in the final Quarter-hour, the touring Czechoslavakian men’s basketball team beat the North Island, 126-80, at Napier, yesterday afternoon.

The North island fielded six New Zealand representatives, but was beaten by taller and more experienced opponents. Ten minutes before half-time, the North Island led the Czechs, 21-15, but the tourists pulled away to lead, 51-40 at half-time. J. Zidek topped the Czech’s scoring with 43 points. J. Ruzicka scored 21 points. For the North Island, C. Pardon scored 18 points, R. South, with a heavily-bandaged leg, was a brilliant leader and R. Agnew was the home side’s outstanding player, scoring 16 points.

On Saturday night, the New Zealand team beat a Hawke’s Bay invitation team, 117-61.

The Czechs beat Palmerston North, 115-59, on Saturday.
