A weak anticyclone is stationary to the west of Auckland and covers the North Island; a strong westerly airstream prevails over the rest of the country, and a cold front in this airstream is expected to become slow-moving today over southern parts of the South Island. Forecast: Buller and Westland.—Fresh to strong westerly winds; overcast with persistent rain; temperatures moderate. Outlook: rain. Nelson.—Fresh westerly winds strong in exposed northern places; cloudy skies with rain at times in the western ranges; moderate temperatures. Outlook: rain in the western ranges, fine elsewhere. Kaikoura Coast and Central Marlborough. —Fresh to strong north-west winds; fine and mild. Outlook: fine. Marlborough Sounds.—Fresh to strong west to north-west winds; cloudy at times but dry; moderate temperatures. Outlook: fine. Canterbury.—Fresh to strong north-west winds decreasing slowly during the day; cloudy with rain in the Alps; moderate temperatures. Outlook: rain in the Alps, fine elsewhere.
