Girls Ordered To Be Returned Home

“I regard this as a social problem rather than a criminal one,” said Mr P. L. Molineaux, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday when Lily Kahurangi Katene and Jacqueline Pene McKillan appeared before him for sentence on charges that they were deemed to be idle and disorderly at Lyttelton on July 22 in that they had insufficient lawful means of support. For this reason he would take the course of ordering that the girls be returned to their homes in the North Island, with a view to the charges being withdrawn by the police later. Mr P. Te Maipi, a Maori Welfare Officer, told the Court that Katene, aged 20, and McKillan, aged 17, would be returned to their families as soon as possible. Both girls had been unemployed for several weeks, he said. “Where these young Maoris come to the metropolitan areas away from their families, and don’t trouble to get employment or proper accommodation, they become a nuisance value and a criminal potential in the community,” said the Magistrate. “I am taking this course in an endeavour to redirect them into useful channels of rehabilitation rather than treat them under the criminal law.” REMANDED A man in his thirties, charged with threatening by Implication to make a disclosure of sexual misconduct against a woman “with intent to induce her against her will,” was further remanded for a month. He was granted renewal of bail and an interim order for suppression of his name was continued. Mr M. Boyce said the remand was requested so that a further medical report on the defendant could be prepared. TWO CHARGES Dieter Andrew Oakley, aged 20, a warehouse assistant, was remanded on bail to July 31 when he appeared on two charges of theft from Millers, Ltd. No plea was entered. He was charged that on or about July 15 he stole two pairs of men’s slacks valued at 31.50; and that on July 23 he stole other items worth a total of $2.99. "DOWNWARD PATH" “You have already started on the downward path," the Magistrate told Awhea Terangi Ririana Wickliffe when she pleaded guilty to being unlawfully on board the m.v. Cymric. Wickliffe, aged 23, was remanded on bail until July 23 for sentence and ordered to live where directed by the Maori Welfare Officer. Senior-Sergeant F. G. Mulcare said that she had been discovered on the ship asleep in a bunk, after coming down to Lyttelton font Wellington on it. She had already been given a deferred sentence for escaping from custody. STOLE COAT Grant Edward Balchin, aged

25, was sentenced to four months periodic detention when he appeared for sentence for the theft of a coat at Haast during May. The Magistrate described Balchin as having had a change of heart, with a marriage planned and a job arranged and said that it was only fair to allow him to remain in the community while he served his sentence. FAILED TO REPORT A man who appeared on a bench warrant was Aned $3O for breach of probation. Roger Cyril Fairweather, aged 18. a steward, bad been committed to probation at Invercargill during October, 1939, for assault, the Court was told. However, he had failed to report on April 27 to the probation officer after moving to Christchurch. PSYCHIATRIC REPORT A youth, whose name was suppressed (Mr L. M. O'Reilly), was remanded until Avgust 7 at Sunnyside Hosptal for a psychiatric report. He was charged with assaulting a constable at Kaiapol on Thursday evening. No plea was taken.
