‘Vulgarity’ Of Pop Picture
"The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN, July 23. A pop art picture featuring a red toilet seat painted in red, white and blue stars and stripes has offended some Americans on the campus of the University of Otago. One of them, Mr S. W. Grief, who is a political science lecturer at the university, has described the picture, which is part of an exhibition hanging in the University Union common-room, as a “piece of vulgarity with no artistic merit” “Its extreme bad taste would not be diminished if it was the British or New Zealand flag, and I would be just as angry if it was the Russian flag,” Mr Grief said. “I am familiar with art forms which contain social comment, but this is not a legitimate protest. It is the product of an anti-democratic and vulgar mind,” he said. Mr Grief said he had complained to the union manager, Mr R. J. Abbott, and had been advised there were various procedures he could follow to have the picture investigated.
