Keen Competition At Sale

Buying inquiry was better than last year at the annual South Island Hereford bull sale at Temuka yesterday. From the entry of 79, 59 were sold at auction, compared with only 49 of 80 offered last year. The over-all average also improved—from $543 last year to $584. The 52 run bulls produced an average of $494, while the seven led bulls averaged $925. A large gallery attended the sale, and any bulls showing size, length, and good markings met good competition. The sale had its weaker stages, but with over-all quality showing a steady improvement, the sale was one of better ones held by the South Island Hereford Cattle Breeders' Association. A led horned Hereford from D. and W. R. Malloeh, of Morton Mains, Southland, topped the sale at $2450. He was/purchased by E. J. Edmonds, of JJilburn Valley, Southland; Another horned bull from the same vendors fetebed $l3OO, being purchased by R. Williams, nf Fox /Glacier. This bull had earlier won

the led class, and was champion bull of the show. No fancy prices were paid for run bulls, although -the prices were, with some exceptions, consistently better. L. J.
