Quality Squash Expected

Play of a high standard is likely in the multisponsored Canterbury squash rackets championships, which will continue this evening.

A large entry of more than 230, including players from Auckland, Hamilton; Wellington, Otago and Timaru, who were brought to the tournament through the generosity of the various sponsors, [should ensure that spectators (will see some quality play. A measure of the standard of the players is that last year’s runner-up in the men’s

open, G. L. Bird (Ashburton), did not gain a place in the seedings for this year’s event Bird, although playing Utile squash these days, will still be a threat to the top seeds with his brilliant range of strokes. Two present New Zealand representatives. D. R. Preston (Christchurch), and L. Greene (Hamilton), head the seedings, with the 1970 national colts team member, N. Barbour (Henderson). in third place, followed by V. Hargreaves (Christchurch). PROBABLE CLASH A meeting between Preston and Greene in the final seems extremely likely, with Greene determined to avenge his defeat by Preston in the recent New Zealand championships. The New Zealand women s champion for 1970, Miss T. Lowes (Remuera), and the runner-up. Mrs J. Webster, lead the Bank of New South Wales Canterbury open championship field Miss K. Glennie (Thorndon) and Mrs R Woodhead (Christchurch) and the third and fourth seeds respectively. Mrs Woodhead won the title last year but will find her task much more difficult this time. The likelihood of Miss Lawes and Mrs Webster meeting in the final is strong and as their match at Auckland went to five games, the result this time could well be different. In the other events Christchurch players predominate in the seedings. The seedings (players from Christchurch unless otherwise stated) are:— MEN Anderson and HUI Championship.—G. Jenkinson 1, R. Me-
