Heavy Snow At Coronet Peak

The national and South Island ski-ing championships, and the Coronet Cup, will be held at Coronet Peak where more than a foot of snow fell on Sunday night and yesterday.

A spokesman for the Mount Cook and Southern Lakes Tourist Company, which runs the field, said that a foot of snow on Sunday night fell as low as the bottom of the field. Late yesterday afternoon there was 18in on the field and it was still snowing about an inch an hour. The road to Coronet Peak was blocked and because of the amount of snow it was certain that the national championships would be held, I The Coronet' Cup sponsored races will be run this Saturday and Sunday before the i national events begin on Monday.
