Table Tennis To Foster
B. A. Foster (Otago) retained his men’s singles title when he beat R. Lee
(Hamilton) in the final of the South Island table tennis championships at Blenheim on Saturday. Foster beat the 15-year-old Lee by superior tactics, varying the spin and placement of the ball and often taking the point with spectacular drives deep into the corners of the table.
Lee appeared most dangerous while counter-hitting, but, when Foster began to chop the ball, too often made mistakes with his loop drive and finishing kill shots. After a close first game, Foster was not again strongly challenged, winning the final, 21-19, 21-7, 21-16.
M. W. Borlase (Hutt Valley) seemed poised for certain victory In his quarter-final match against Lee, with the score at 18-13 in the fifth game. However, a lapse in concentration by' Borlase allowed Lee to recover and from 18-20 down he won the game,. 23-21. Of the eight seeds in the men’s singles, only five reached the quarter-finals. The third seed, B. L. Foster, was beaten in five games by Ling Nan Ming (Canterbury), the fourth seed, F. R. Foster (Wellington), lost to J. R. Morris (Hamilton) and the eighth seed, T. -A. Quinn (Auckland) lost to Borlase.
Otago won the open women's singles when Miss Y. Fogarty easily beat Mrs L. Barker (Marlborough). Mrs Barker, who was unseeded, reached the final after beating the second seed, Miss G. Kemp (Hutt Valley), and the fourth seed, Mrs R. Sunderland (Otago). In the final Mrs Barker could not counter the penetrating attack of the New Zealand champion, and lost in straight games. The unseeded combination ol Borlase and D. T. Thorner (Hutl Valley), after years of trying, finally won a major title when they beat F. R. and R. L. Foster in the final of the open men’s doubles. The pair narrowly survived the opening match, recovering from 18-20 in the deciding game to win 24-22 against J. Armstrong and B. Lassen.
