U.K. SHADOW CABINET

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, July 17.

The outspoken leader of the British Labour Party’s Left-wing, Mr Michael Foot, has won a seat on the Opposition’s Shadow Cabinet, which leads the challenge to the new Conservative Government in the House of Commons.

He is the only one of 12 Labour M.P.’s, elected by party ballot, never to have held Ministrelial office. The former Home Secretary, Mr James Callaghan, heads the list, with 178 votes, followed by Mr Denis Healey (165), Mr Anthony Crosland (157), Mr Douglas Houghton (150), Mr Anthony Wedg wood Benn (133), Mr Foot (124), Mrs Shirley Williams (122), Mr Harold Lever (115), Mr Edward Short (114), Mr Fred Peart (110), Mr George Thomson (107), and Mrs Barbara Castle (98).

The former Foreign Secretary, Mr Michael Stewart (66 votes), and former President of the Board of Trade, Mr Roy Mason (52) were among the 40 defeated candidates. The success of Mr Foot, a journalist and author, who will be 57 next Thursday, came after he had been run-ner-up last week to the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Roy Jenkins for the party’s deputy leadership.

Both the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Wilson) and Mr Jenkins are automatically members of the Shadow Cabinet
