Tourist Projects
Sir,—The Labour member for St Albans has attacked the Minister of Tourism for his failure to help provide a hotel at Akaroa, baths at Hanmer Springs, and a hotel in Christchurch. Why, then, has he voted against a proposal to aid such projects? The State Advances Corporation Amendment Bill has been introduced with these proposals in mind. It allows the S.A.C. to guarantee loans made to approved schemes so that the finance needed will be easier to raise and cheaper to service. Akaroa is a perfect example of where this private guaranteed investment would work, yet the members for Sydenham, Lyttelton, and St Albans, along with their Labour Party colleagues, have vehemently opposed and voted against the bill. Your report says that the people of Akaroa call the Minister “the foiler.” I wonder what they call their own member who is trying to prevent this Government help.—Yours, etc., R. A. GORMACK.
