TUATARA COUNTRY on Stephens Island, a lighthouse station and wildlife sanctuary on the west side of Cook Strait. It has the largest population of tuataras in New Zealand. The fence, erected by the Wildlife Service of the Department of Internal Affairs, has allowed the main part of the island to revert to its natural state after being grazed by stock.
