Employers Warned On Tax Statements
The Inland Revenue Department is preparing to prosecute about 1000 Christchurch employers for failing to return taxation reconciliation statements for the last financial year. The District Commissioner of Taxes (Mr C. K. Jones) said yesterday that the statements were now more than two months overdue, and
were holding up payments of refunds to several thousand salary and wage-earners.
Employers had received reminder notices about the statements last month, and unless they came in very soon proceedings would be started. Mr Jones said that almost 75,000 salary and wage-earn-ers had already furnished returns, and most would have received their refunds by the end of July. The department still awaited 5000 salary and wageearner returns. Most of these were probably outstanding because employees were still waiting for their income certificates from employers. The situation was most unsatisfactory for employees—who had to wait far longer than necessary for refunds—and for the department, which would get behind in a tight work programme, Mr Jones said.
