Vegetable And Fruit Prices
Several lines of vegetables were dearer at the Christchurch produce markets yesterday. Carrots cost 30 cents more, selling up to $1.30 a case, while onions increased by 20 cents, costing up to $3.60 a bag. Utah celery rose 50 cents, selling up to $2.80 a case. There was a plentiful supply of Oamaru and Nelson lettuce. They cost 35 cents less, from 20 cents to $1 a case. Most other vegetables and fruit were in good supply. The official price range supplied by the Christchurch Fruit and Vegetable Wholesalers’ Association was:— Silver Beet.—To 80c a case. Beetroot.—To 70c a case. Pumpkins.—To $2 a sack. Cabbages —4oc to $1.20 a case. Carrots. —$1 to $1.30 a case. Cauliflowers.—3oc to 80c a case. Onions.—To $3.60 a bag. Parsnips.—soc to $1 a bag. Swedes. —50c to $1 a bag. Potatoes.—To $1 a sugar bag. Kumeras.—To $5 a case. Lettuces.—2oc to $1 a case. Utah Celery.—To $2.80 a case. Spinach.—s2 a case. Rhubarb.—s2 a dozen bunches. Tomatoes.—2oc to 50 per lb. Grapes.—6sc to $1.30 per lb. Grapefruit.—To $5 a case. Passionfruit.—s2.so a case. Tamarillos.—sl.so to $3.80 a case. Chinese Gooseberries. —To $3 a case.
Mines Loss.—State coal mines operated at a net loss of sl.sm in the year ended {March 31, according to the annual report of the Conitroller and Auditor-General.
