Southern Win At Awapuni?

“The Press” special Service WELLINGTON. Jay Ribbon has returned to Awapuni and tomorrow may score his second success in three attempts on the track in the Winter Cup Trial, first race of the Manawatu Hupnt Club’s T.A.B. concession double.

Jay Ribbon, which is trained at Wingatui, arrived at Awapuni on Tuesday with the Manawatu Hunt Cup contender, El Keba, under the care of H. T. Anderton.

A five-year-old Fountainhead gelding, Jay Ribbon has only ventured twice into the Central Districts but each time has been a lucrative one.

The Awapuni Christinas meeting of 1968 saw him take the Manawatu Cup, over 11 furlongs, after failing ovei the identical distance on the first day of that meeting. On the same campaign he was second to Odeon in the Pahiatua Cup at Woodville but was awarded first when Odeon was disqualified later after returning a positive swab.

He also finished fourth in the “Sonny” Smith Memorial (one mile and a quarter and 80 yards) on the final day of that meeting but later in the month was well back in both the Wellington Cup and Sum mer Handicap at Trentham. Trentham Win However, the previous year Jay Ribbon had scored handsomely in the Whyte Handicap at Trentham, a race in -which he failed in a fortnight ago at his last start The Winter Cup Trial, a lead up to the Winter Cup at Riccarton on the first day of the Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National meeting, has always been a fairly good pointer to the event All going well Jay Ribbon will be an acceptor at Ric carton. Jay Ribbon never emerged from the ruck in a strong field of milers at Trentham but as his previous sprint placing at Watallan at Washdyke was pleasing he should

be ready to keep his sound North Island record intact. Another win for Mias must eventuate shortly if there is any reward for consistency and he should be the one to offer most opposition. Two sound placings at the recent Trentham meeting followed a win and placing and this Wanganui gelding is proving a great moneyspinner for his trainer, Miss R. Jackson.

The Hawera entire, Jinda byne, failed dismally over six at Trentham but should appreciate the additional two furlongs tomorrow and will certainly notice the 91b drop in weight to 8-5. The Matamata trainer, R Autridge, has every chance

to extend his recent success with his three-year-old gelding Sir Cullus in the second leg, the Tararua Hack Plate Sir Cullus’s record at Trentham was a win and a second in two starts. He made his winning debut on the Awapuni course last month when scoring effortlessly in maiden class. As the same heavy conditions that pre vailed on that occasion should be similar tomorrow he should have little trouble in carrying on his winning way. However, one which might give him a lot of bother is Frederik, slightly unlucky in his two starts at Trentham. He may be harder to keep out with a better run.

Count Out’s consecutive successes made him one of the favoured candidates at Trentham on the first day but he was always well back and finished second last in the 23-horse field. Reportedly he was unable to handle the conditions and should be given another chance. '

Two improved efforts from Sweet Bourbon point to a not-too-distant victory. The latest pleasing run came at Trentham last Saturday. Gather was another to come through Trentham with flying colours. Even though he has a wide draw to contend with he may be one of the major contenders.
