Pit Stops
The 140-mile Lupp Cup inter-club rally held by the University Motor Club earlier this month was won by J. Raine (Volkswagen, University M.C.) with a loss of 478.6 points, and B. Higham (Volkswagen, V.W.0.C.) was second with a loss of 807.3. M. Coup (Anglia, University M.C.) was third with 829.3; R. Beirne (Cortina) was fourth, and R. Crone (Fiat, University M.C.) was fifth with 1009.4. The University club A team was first in the important team results, the Canterbury Car Club’s A team was second, and the R.A.T.E.C. A team was third. There were 29 entries. ¥ * ¥
The Jim Clark trophy will be awarded by the Motorsport Association for the first time this year. Clubs, journalists, the N.Z.B.C. and Motorsport Association executive members have been asked to nominate candidates for the award, and the final selection will be made by a panel appointed by the association. The winner will have to be a New Zealand driver, he will have to have competed in national events during the 1969-70 season, and he must have performed in
the “Jim Clark style,” showing endeavour and sportsmanship. Singleseater, saloon, and sportscar drivers are eligible. ¥ ¥ ¥
A new version of the Type 69 Lotus Formula II car is to be sold in the United States and Canada. It will have a space-frame chassis and a Ford twincam 1600 c.c. engine. ¥ ¥ ¥
The new motor-racing circuit at Waitati, five miles north of Dunedin, is expected to be opened in the first week of October, the Motorsport Association has said in a statement. This will bring the number of permanent racing circuits in New Zealand to seven. ¥ ¥ ¥
The Wheatcroft team has withdrawn from Formula I racing, but will continue to run a car for Derek Bell in the European Formula II championship, a championship which Bell at present leads. ¥ ¥ ¥
The city of Stuttgart provided a special civic welcome for the returning Porsche team which won at Le Mans. The first and second - placed Porsches drove through the streets of Stuttgart to the town hall, where the Mayor welcomed home the team and congratulated it on its victory. ¥ ¥ ¥
New Zealand racing drivers competing overseas cannot race as representatives of New Zealand because the Motorsport Association is not a direct affiliate of the world body, the Federation Internationale de L’Automobite. To remedy this the association's executive will recommend to its annual council meeting in September that it affiliates with the F.I.A.
