SQUASH TITLE
Seed Loses To Preston (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND Three members of the NewZealand world championship team in Britain last year—P. Dibley (Maketu), T. W. Johnston (Rotorua), and D. Burmeister (North Shore)—last night reached the men’s semifinals of the Rothmans-spon-sored New Zealand squash rackets championships at the Remuera courts. The fourth semi-finalist will be D. Preston (Christchurch!, who beat the fourth-seeded L. Greene (Hamilton) in five games after losing the first two. For an hour. Johnston and J Stevens (Remuera) gave an absorbing display. The lefthanded Johnston, with his greater variety of shot, more deadly drops and eagerness to seek the volley, deserved his victory. Dibley and C. Waugh (Henderson), old rivals of former years, waged a hard battle before the former won in three games Waugh, who has won the national title on five previous occasions, showed much of his old retrieving skill, but Dibley had most of the answers. Results:
Men.—Quarter-finals: D. Burmeister (North Shore) beat N. Barbour (Henderson), 92. 92. 9-7; T. W. Johnston (Rotorua) beat J. Stevens (Remuera), 5-9. 9-0, 7-9. 9-3, 9-3: P. Dibley (Maketu) beat C. Waugh (Henderson), 9-4, 9-4, 9-5; D. Preston (Christchurch) beat L. Greene (Hamilton). 5-9, 8-10, 9-5, 10-8, 9-5.
Women.—Quarter-finals: Mrs J. Legg (North Shore) beat Miss R. Woodhead (Christchurch). 1-9, 3-9. 9-4, 9-5, 9-6: Mrs J Webster (Manurewa) beat Mrs H. Corporaal (Remuera), 9-4. 9-3, 9-4; Miss R. Davis (Henderson) beat Miss K. Glennie (Thorndon), 7-9, 9-4, 9-4, 9-1; Miss T. Lawes (Remuera) beat Mrs M Lye (Manurewa), 9-3. 9-4, 9-4.
