Nurses Win Pay Rise
(N Z Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, July 15. Nurses have won the higher pay increases for which they went out on strike for 3j weeks until last Friday. They will receive rises of between $3.20 and $5.80 a week on top of the increases ranging from $7.10 to $12.10 awarded by the Commonwealth Conciliation Arbitration Commission on May 14. The additional increases will operate from the first pay period after July 18 They were recommended in Melbourne yesterday by Mr Justice Williams, a member of the commission, who presided over the original full bench hearing of the nurses’ claims. But the matron of Canberra Hospital, Mrs M. Guy, said last night that Canberra nurses would not be delighted by the rises. “I don’t think it’s a big rise,” she said. "It isn’t very much for three years training.”
