Checkers Back In Winning Form
After suffering upset defeats to University A and Rookies in the last two weeks, the province's leading team for Bve years, Checkers A, regained its winning habit when it beat New Brighton, 21-19, in a women's A grade indoor basketball match at Cowies Stadium last evening. other successful teams were University A and Rebels A, who won their games against Rookies and Rangtora A. respectively. Points are: Checkers A 23. Brighton A 18, Rex A 17, University A 15, Rookies 10, Rebels A 10, Rangiora A 8. CHKKIM A 31: J. Baker 9, P. Beban 6, J. Harding 6. NffW ■KIGHTON A »: R. Leask 6. C. Symonds 4. E. Butler 3. J. Strange 2. M. Ridder 2. H. Collins 3. With a good display of fastmoving. crisp-handling basketball, Checkers A deservedly beat New Brighton after leading throughout the game. Checkers’ superior speed on the break, especially from J. Baker and P. Beban, and controlled passing within the keyhole before the incisive drive, or the set-shot by J. Harding, always had New Brighton struggling. New Brighton’s attack looked
leaden-footed in comparison, but it improved from late in the first half to trouble its opponent. R. Leask excelled with some good shooting and determined mid-court harassing of the opposition. UNIVERSITY A 36: S. Lee 14. A. Sweeney 6, G. Hannan 6, D. Duncan 6, N. van Noppen 4, M. Roydhouse 2. ROOKIES 18: H. Agnew 6, L. Paulin 4, R. Henry 4. B. Marshall 4. A much improved University A team ended Rookies' run of successes with a fine display of team-work and accurate shooting. Without J. Harnett and B. Walker, the team’s two national netball representatives. Rookies did not establish command of the mid-court as in their previous two matches. The game was refreshingly free-scoring compared to other dour encounters, and S. Lee returned to her best form. For University, G. Hannan showed a welcome tendency to attack the basket with more determination while maintaining her usual fine defence. REBELS A 23: C. McMaster 8, D. Shearer 7, D. Gosney 4, C. Cook 2, J. Meyer 2.
