Some Snow In Canterbury
Some snow fell in Canterbury yesterday; the upper levels of Banks Peninsula, and the foothills, had a coating.
Sleet made driving hazardous on Banks Peninsula Roads and on the Porters Pass and Lewis Pass routes to the West Coast. Motorists were advised to use chains on the West Coast roads. The Rahu Saddle on the Lewis Pass road was reported to be extremely icy. The evening in most areas was clear and cold, although occasional heavy rain and sleet fell in Christchurch. Snow fell for about a quarter of an hour at the Hilltop on the Christchurch to Akaroa road, but little settled. In Christchurch the maximum temperature for the day was 48 degrees, and the temperature was above 40 degrees for only about six hours.
More than sin of snow fell at the Mount Cook National Park headquarters weather station on Tuesday, the heaviest fall in the Mount Cook area this season. Two inches of snow fell at Burke’s Pass.
