Meat Processing
Sir,—l would just like to ask Mr Greville, who explained that all meat was thoroughly inspected, how the reported filthy meat that was sent back from America got through.—Yours, etc., CURIOUS.
July 10, 1970. [Mr M. E. Greville, district meat inspector for the Department of Agriculture, replies: “The meat rejected by the United States Department of Agriculture is by no means ‘filthy’. The standards applied to this meat by the United States Department of Agriculture are extremely critical—so much so that inspection of these cartons must be done; under extra-bright lighting,' and the use of a magnifying glass is not unknown. This: problem is being overcome,: but 1 can assure ‘Curious’ that the term ‘filthy does not apply.”]
