Bowling club honours three members
The Christchurch Bowling Club broke a drought of more than 15 yean on the electing of life members by elevating three of its number to the high office at its recent annual meeting. They are Messrs J. R. Smith, M. A. Le Cren and M. K. Boon. The three are now the only living life members of the elub. which, with a history of 95 years, is the oldest bowling dub in Canterbury.
Mr Smith joined the club in 1944, Mr LeCren in 1946 and Mr Boon in 1949. All three have served terms as president, while Messn Le Cren and Smith have gone on to be presidents of the Christchurch Bowling Centre and the New
Zealand Bowling Association.
At present Mr Smith is convener of the centre’s selection committee and Mr Le Cren is his club’s delegate to the centre. On the playing side, Messrs Smith and Boon have long been prominent, both at the centre and at the national leveL
The playing strength of the club should be enriched in the coming season by a number of leading bowlers from other clubs.
Foremost among these is the 1968 New Zealand singles champion, S. E. Lawson (formerly of Burwood) and the centre representatives, D. Langley (Mount Pleasant) and W. R. Fleming (St Albans). Two other notable gains are G. H. Humphries and F. Needham. Last season Humphries was runner-up in the Canterbury club’s singles championship and Needham filled a similar position at the Mount Pleasant club.
Langley previously played at Christchurch and he remained a member of the club during his years at Mount Pleasant Humphries has been an honorary member of Christchurch for some years.
