Gold leaf
There is only one way in which furniture can be gilded with any degree of permanence, and this is with gold leaf. The furniture above will have been prepared with several coats of special filling and size, and once these were thoroughly dry a burnished gold size will have been brushed on and also allowed to dry out thoroughly. Then it will have been moistened with water and the gold leaf, —in this case, a red gold—applied and gently patted into the carving with the tip of a large, flat camel-hair brush. Nowadays this would be done in a much simpler way, by using gold leaf which has been bought already laid On squares of tissue. This is placed gold side down on the sized surface and the back lightly rubbed with a ball of wadding. Then the tissue is lifted away, leaving the gold adhering to the size.
